God’s Testimony
It seemed a good place to start at the beginning, in Genesis 1 with God’s creative process. But before we look at that I want to talk to you about God’s testimony. Because when I ask the question “What do we glean from Genesis 1 that is relevant to our lives?”, I have to look at the Testimony of God to answer that.
I was inspired by this scripture from Psalm 119 on a Bible Society tract.
I have chosen Your way of truth; Your judgements I have laid before me. I cling to Your testimonies; O Lord do not put me to shame! I will run the course of Your commandments, for You shall enlarge my heart. Teach me the way of Your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end
There are in my life a number of building blocks God has given me. Things that God builds on, and grows. Things that come up again and again in many ways, or link things together. This is one of those building blocks
As I read those words that first time I was struck by the wording of the verse. It spoke to me of several things. Of God’s testimony, of holding onto that testimony of God, and of God’s heart.
God’s testimony. This is His reference. His CV or Resume. When we go for a job interview we make a CV to give to the person advertising the job. The CV contains a synopsis of our working life, a little about ourself, references from people etc. The testimony enclosed within helps the advertiser to decide whether we are the person best suited for the position he has.
So God came along and said. “This is Me, cling to my testimony. All of creation, all of the Bible, All of My History with man. It is a testimony of who I am and how I work. It is My character, My Purposes, My Heart”.
God is a creative God, He is always doing something new. But like us His character, who He is remains. He though is totally constant and reliable in His character. We can believe in who He has been is who He is. In this verse it says take hold of My testimony, “cling to it”. Don’t let it go or give up on it. Expect God to be that God again. For His character is unchanging.
Your judgements I have laid before me: His thoughts and His ways we have laid before us, the things that are important to God, His heart. We make them part of our lives. His history we hold onto, we hold it as a standard for God.
So every so often I would be reading the Bible and God would speak the word “testimony” into my heart. Things I could take hold of as being His character. He showed me too things in creation. The things God has made speak to us to of His character. Take a beautiful scene. Looks beautiful, breathtaking. Look up close. Is every leaf and flower perfect in formation? Is everything in neat, and full of life. No, but as we look at it we don’t see those things. It is beauty to us.
Who God is is in His creation. The same God who created everything, created us. He is creative and new in what He does, but the way He works is constant
